New Hanover County citizens, and the small businesses that drive the local economy, face much higher taxes following the 2010 election. AGAIN! Once again, citizens will be asked to fork over more of their hard-earned money to Wilmington and New Hanover County to pay for wasteful spending by local career politicians and “the good ole boys and girls club”...including some who call themselves “Republican.”  This year, you have a choice between big government, tax-and-spend insiders from both parties masquerading as “reformers” or “conservatives,” and even more substantial increases in taxes, utility fees and other burdens placed on business and families (including retirees…on fixed incomes).  

Or voters finally have a real choice for change.

One candidate, Brian Berger, has consistently, publicly:

• opposed wasteful spending, higher taxes, and corrupt, unaccountable local government.
• Cited the need for tackling rising crime, including violent crime and the gang epidemic turning once safe neighborhoods dangerous.  Berger has prioritized law enforcement when other candidates prioritized convention centers and other expensive projects wasting your tax dollars. 
• Offered a comprehensive plan to improve job opportunities by reforming the broken economic development system that has failed dramatically in bringing new businesses to our area or helping those businesses already here in our community.
• Recognized and fought for clean waterways and a clean environment.
• Was a leading voice against the $4.2 million “sweetheart deal” for Titan Cement and continues to oppose this shortsighted decision, which would bring few new jobs to the area. Berger was the first and remains the strongest advocate of rescinding the tax incentives offered by New Hanover County and supported, quietly, by other candidates.
